You may have heard the term “wrongful termination” in many situations. However, only certain types of terminations are classified as “wrongful” under the law. A wrongful termination requires that you were fired for an unlawful reason. Illegal reasons may include violation of anti-discrimination laws, violation of whistleblower laws, or for example, breach of contract. If your termination was not the result of a legal or contractual violation, it is likely that you are an at-will employee and have no legal basis for the termination to be considered unfair.
